Sint Maarten

Island adventure, Caribbean beaches, and unforgettable aviation

Sint Maarten is one of the Caribbean's most unique island destinations, offering a perfect blend of beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, outdoor adventure, and world-famous aviation. Shared between the Dutch nation of Sint Maarten in the south and the French collectivity of Saint-Martin in the north, the island combines two distinct cultures into one unforgettable vacation destination.

Despite its relatively small size, the island offers an incredible variety of experiences. Visitors can relax on powdery white-sand beaches, snorkel in crystal-clear Caribbean waters, explore colorful seaside towns, hike to scenic viewpoints, enjoy duty-free shopping, or sample everything from casual beachside barbecue to upscale French cuisine. Driving around the island is an attraction in itself, with stunning coastal scenery, rolling hills, and picturesque harbors around nearly every turn.

Philipsburg, the capital on the Dutch side, is known for its lively waterfront, shopping, cruise port, and beautiful Great Bay Beach, while Marigot on the French side offers charming markets, cafés, marinas, and a distinctly European atmosphere. Throughout the island, visitors will find welcoming locals, laid-back Caribbean hospitality, and an easygoing pace that makes it simple to slow down and enjoy every moment.

Of course, no visit to Sint Maarten would be complete without experiencing the world-famous Maho Beach. Located just beyond the runway at Princess Juliana International Airport, it's one of the few places on Earth where visitors can safely watch large commercial airliners pass just overhead as they arrive to land. For aviation enthusiasts, it's truly a bucket-list destination, but even those with little interest in airplanes quickly discover why Maho Beach has become one of the Caribbean's most iconic attractions.

Whether you're planning a relaxing beach vacation, an island road trip, or a week packed with excursions and local food, Sint Maarten offers far more than many first-time visitors expect. Its combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and unforgettable experiences makes it one of the Caribbean's most rewarding islands to explore.

Getting There

Most visitors arrive through Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), the island's primary international gateway and one of the most famous airports in the world. Direct flights connect Sint Maarten with major cities across the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean, making it an easy island to reach despite its tropical location. For many travelers—including us—the airport itself is part of the adventure. Princess Juliana's runway begins just beyond the sands of Maho Beach, allowing arriving aircraft to pass astonishingly close overhead before touching down. Watching these dramatic landings has made Sint Maarten a bucket-list destination for aviation enthusiasts from around the globe, and it was the very reason we planned our trip here. Once on the island, renting a car is one of the best ways to explore. The entire island can be driven in roughly an hour without traffic, making it easy to visit both the Dutch and French sides, discover hidden beaches, enjoy scenic coastal drives, and stop at local restaurants and attractions along the way. While taxis are readily available, having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to experience everything Sint Maarten has to offer at your own pace.
